CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Early the next morning when they met Talla near the center pit, Alexis was better able to see the entire camp in the daylight. Makeshift leaf tents were positioned near the woods, and she noticed a few thatch huts that hadn’t been destroyed, but her attention was drawn to six animal totems surrounding the camp.

“Each tribe in Azaria not only has a jewel, but also an animal and element to control as well,” Talla explained as they walked around the different totems. “There’s the hawk, symbolizing air and the elves. The dragon is a fire symbol for all Amazons. Bears are earth symbols for both the giants and dwarves. Water nymphs are symbolized by the dolphin. Wolves are, of course, for the Cooshie clan. And the lioness, the symbol of strength and royalty, is the symbol for the Seelie court.”

“So what will we be learning today?” Jordan asked as they approached Kulnor and a few others. “Hopefully there will be more weapons training, although yesterday it seemed like I have been using the bow forever.”

“I felt the same way, though swinging that ax wore me out quicker than I expected it to,” Sean said. “That morloc would have had me if Kulnor hadn’t stepped in.”

“You were handling yourself quite well, for a novice,” Kulnor said, putting a hand on Sean’s shoulder. “You’ll learn how to fight smarter and not lose strength so quickly.”

“You will all learn how to fight with weapons and more,” Flora said, gliding down to stand in front of the group. “First you will learn how your amulets can be used to control elements, read minds, and communicate with animals.”

“You mean we can control things like fire or water, or make people do what we want them to?” Jade asked.

“Can any fey do these things?” Jenna asked.

“Not everyone has the same powers, my lady,” Talla said. “Some have to use a bit of magic, like the Amazon ability to mask their appearance, while others have strength or talents such as healing or reading minds. Your amulets amplify your natural powers and the stone gives you control over your tribe’s element.”

“Have we always been able to do this?” Alexis asked, holding her amulet.

“Not in the mortal realm, princess,” Talla explained. “The main purpose of the amulets while you were there was to protect you from man’s iron and to keep Morlin from finding you. They also subdued your abilities till you were of age. The onset of your powers yesterday gave you access to more thoughts than you were able to handle and caused the power surge storm you experienced.”

“That explains the protection rune on the other side of the amulet,” Sean said. “Now that we’re in Azaria, how does it protect us?”

“As long as you’re wearing it, Morlin can’t read your minds or sense exactly where you are.” Talla added, “It makes you invisible to his orb. The amulets’ main purpose now is to enhance your powers and, when the time is right, to be combined into one talisman Alexandria will wear into battle.
